Heart Game

You have the sensation of falling--no, drowning. Your lungs burn, you can’t breathe, you try to struggle but the current drags you down down down and just as you’re losing consciousness you know you’re dying...

You jerk, abruptly, the landing a little rough as you stand. Your clothes are dry and there’s no water in your lungs. You can breathe.

You find a bluetooth headset on your head, it crackles with static then goes silent.

((Join #sharkbait. Go ahead and start right here. Unless you're Nezumi in which case start here. If you're late check with me on IRC where to start.))

((POWERS: all combat and non-healing powers are ON in this heart. Status removing powers and items are off. Healing powers and items are almost completely ineffective at the start, I'll tell you if it changes. You have all your equipment.))

I don't think I ever have, and the knight out there said this heart operates on video game logic. Destroy the bad things, save the good ones, but also since Shark isn't straightforward it's not quite that simple. Does knowing it's like a video game help at all-?

It didn't help much last time, but. . .

[trails off, thoughtfully]

If you destroy the bad things but leave the good things in tact, maybe the heart can reboot at the last save point?

I legitimately don't know what that means.

[. . . oh, right]

I mean, er. . . if we get rid of everything bad, then the heart itself might be able to go back to the way it was before we messed with it.

[hesitates]

The other option is that the heart is so corrupt that it needs an entirely new save file. Which means starting again fresh.

I got the sense from talking to him that it was more like... internal logic? He did say after I questioned the logic of breaking everything that it was more like "defeat the bad guy, save the princess".

[ah. brightens a bit, getting it now]

No, that makes sense. If that's the case, then we have a lot of side-quests to finish before we can confront the final boss.

Er, which means we need to take care of the smaller things first and slowly build our way up to the more serious things.

He also said you can't complete yellow until you complete blue and red, and you can't complete blue until you complete red.

I'm guessing there's little keys and puzzles, which is why I'm interested in the stained glass.

[nods]

Red, blue, yellow, and then black.

The stained glass could be a key to something in another room, too. He gave us a few key items in the beginning, but never specified what they're for. Sometimes, in video games, that's how it works.

I really don't feel properly educated now.

I don't think it's a matter of education, just wasted afternoons in front of a television.

Clearly not wasted.

Only if we actually manage to fix what went wrong.

We'll have to trust our instincts.
