00 The Fool - Ryugamine Mikado - [livejournal.com profile] brovolution

Represents the beginning and suggests infinite possibilities.


A second year highschool student in Ikebukuro's Raira Academy. He's the class representative along with his friend Sonohara Anri. He is also the founder of 4chan the anonymous internet group "Dollars". He arrived in Emerald before taking leadership of the color gang Blue Square. That doesn't mean he hasn't been busy in Emerald, however. Living with the information broker Orihara Izaya, Mikado has been working his way through the ranks of the Church of Dagon for his own reasons. He's also been studying magic. He commands a still small, but zealously loyal group of NPCs followers. He also runs a small but successful business with Ushiromiya Lion. In what scarce spare time he has between these activities, he maintains his friendships a little distantly, and continues to study magic and business to succeed in his ambitions. The path before him is long and filled with darkness. What awaits him on his journey?

01 The Magician - Kida Masaomi - [livejournal.com profile] escondre

Represents action and initiative… but also immaturity.


Mikado's best friend since childhood. Though Masaomi moved away from their home town in middle school, they kept in touch over the internet. When Masaomi invited Mikado to come join him in Ikebukuro at Raira for highschool, Mikado immediately accepted and convinced his parents to let him go. Masaomi has been a juvenile delinquent, and even founded the color gang Yellow Scarves, something he kept from Mikado. This all came to light in canon through a series of events that ended in Masaomi vanishing from Ikebukuro without warning afterward. Masaomi was already living with Izaya when Mikado arrived in Emerald. Not knowing the history between Izaya and Masaomi, the three of the lived together fairly peacefully for a while until Mikado began to learn magic. Agitated by his own anxieties and Izaya's goading, Masaomi went with the Church of Dagon to perform a ritual of protection. Not knowing this, Mikado interrupted the ritual in fear that Masaomi was being hurt, thus killing his friend. With Izaya's help Mikado was able to resurrect Masaomi by giving him part of his soul. The resurrected Masaomi moved out of the house and went to live with Ange. Many more troubles seem to be piling up around the friendship of the two.

Represents formality and knowledge, and stands for religion.


Mikado knew Will as Lion's lover before he met the man. When he did meet Will it was after an awful day--the meeting ended with Mikado stabbing Will with scissors accidentally. Noticing Will's swift healing, he immediately found out that Will was not only not human, but an angel. Since then Will was there to patch up Mikado after Mikado and Lion got injured. He accepted their teasing with grumpy grace, and has acted as someone to answer Mikado's questions and be a guide and friend to Mikado. Mikado in turn cares for Will, staying by his side when he was sick and worrying about him. Will is usually the first person Mikado turns to with questions about magic. Mikado has great trust and respect for Will, and considers him highly.

Represents the knowledge of what is right, and what is wrong.


Mikado met Erika after one of her nightmares. She was in the rain, skinning a dead cat and yelling at it. He stood over her with an umbrella and brought her home, ignoring her warnings about her character. Since then she has visited his room randomly, and he's even participated in one of her dreams, a Witch trial for custody of her as a piece. Mikado cares about her, and also relies on her strength. She's the one he turned to when he believed Masaomi was in trouble, and she is the one he summons when he himself is in trouble. He trusts her, and cares both for her as a person, and for her feelings. Her power in battle is an asset to him, but perhaps her ability to remain by his side without being upset at his darker actions is something he values even more. He would protect her from harm even at the expense of his own safety. Paradoxically, though, he relies on her strength to help further his own goals.

15 The Devil - Orihara Izaya - [livejournal.com profile] ragnarokker

Represents temptation.


Mikado met the strange man shortly after arriving in Ikebukuro. He also arrived in Emerald in Izaya's house and started living with Izaya and Masaomi that day. They don't have too much in the way of heartfelt or personal discussions usually, but Mikado is fond of Izaya from knowing him from chatrooms as "Kanra-san" and words of encouragement Izaya has spoken to him in the past. While Masaomi warned Mikado about Izaya again when Masaomi moved out, and Mikado trusts his friend's judgment, he still has more faith in Izaya than he should, even though he is beginning to look more closely at Izaya's true nature. It was Izaya's machinations that pushed Mikado, Anri and Masaomi to strife in Ikebukuro, and it was Izaya again who gently shoved Mikado and Masaomi in the direction that led to Masaomi's death.

Represents a glimmer of hope, and he is suffused with a serene calm.


Lion is a sweet girl, a friend of Kida's that Mikado also became close with. She is sincere and kind, as well as intelligent and business minded. Mikado and Lion have had a few adventures, including nearly getting eaten by a Deep One and a monstrous dog. Surviving somehow, they decided to learn magic together. As well as studying the arcane, they began their own clothing business. Mikado likes Lion a lot and finds her company soothing, as well as finding her a good partner to practice magic with. They have plenty of things to do together, between magic and business, and their shared friendships. Lion was the one to help Mikado set up the basic spell structure for a communications network based on the internet of his time period. With Lion's assistance, perhaps the internet really can exist in the 1800s.
